Role Overview
We are seeking a friendly, compassionate, and reliable Personal Support Assistant to provide one-on-one care and assistance to an individual with a recent diagnosis of dementia and poor mobility. The ideal candidate will offer practical support, companionship, and assistance with daily activities, ensuring the individual’s well-being and comfort in their home environment.
Key Responsibilities
Home Management Assistance: Help maintain a clean, organised, and comfortable living environment.
Assist with exercise routine, exercise maintains muscle strength, bone density, and balance.
Personal Care Support: Assist with showering, dressing, and hygiene routines in a respectful and patient manner.
Mobility Assistance: Help with movement indoors, in the garden, and during outdoor activities.
Companionship & Social Engagement: Provide friendly conversation and encourage participation in hobbies and interests. Assist the person on outings.
Meal Preparation: Assist in cooking meals, including batch cooking, following dietary guidance
Medical & Medication Support: Accompany to medical appointments and remind the individual to take medication at the correct times.
Shopping & Errands: Support with grocery shopping and ensure essential household supplies are stocked.
Health & Safety: Follow manual handling procedures, report hazards, and wear PPE as required.
Observation & Adaptability: Recognise changes in health or mood and adjust support accordingly.
Look at well-loved objects and photographs to help the person feel more secure. Remind the person who you are if she doesn’t remember, but try not to say, “Don’t you remember?” Encourage a two-way conversation for as long as possible.
Skills & Qualifications
Caring & Patient Nature: Ability to provide support in a friendly, light-hearted, and compassionate way.
Excellent Communication Skills: Comfortable engaging in conversation and maintaining a positive relationship with the individual and their family.
Initiative & Adaptability: Ability to assess needs and offer help where required, while respecting boundaries.
Respect for Privacy & Confidentiality: Ensure the individual’s home and personal life are treated with dignity and discretion.
Basic Cooking Skills: Ability to prepare meals following dietary guidelines.
Attention to Detail: Awareness of health conditions such as pain, and the ability to respond appropriately.
Previous Care Experience (Preferred): While prior experience in a caring role is beneficial, a genuine willingness to learn and provide high-quality support is essential.
Additional Requirements
Willingness to undertake training as required, including health and safety, moving and assisting, and first aid.
Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
Ability to recognise when the individual is experiencing pain and adjust support accordingly.
This role is vital in preventing carer burnout and ensuring both the gentleman and his wife receive the necessary support.
Post subject to successful reference and PVG checks.
Two up to date Reference contacts are required one of which must be from a present or previous employer. In addition, a new PVG enhanced disclosure will be required prior to appointment (disclosure cost to be met by the employer).
Probationary Period attached is 6 months to this post. During this period, either party can end the employment by giving the other one weeks’ notice.
