2 P/T Personal Support Assistant / Drivers to work within North Ayrshire – Largs   

The person requiring support is a 39 year old man who, due to cerebral palsy, has been confined to a wheelchair since birth. A hoist is used for transfers, therefore you must have a current moving and handling certificate or willing to train.

He requires assistance with all day to day activities for example, dressing, toileting (He is continent), eating, maintenance of personal hygiene. He uses a power-drive wheelchair. He has his own transport – a  Ford Tourneo Custom WAV.

Drivers desirable as part of his Team, but some shifts are suitable for non drivers.

He can feed himself under supervision. He communicates through speech although, because of difficulty with some consonants it can take time to be understood, therefore being patient and listening is a big part of the role.

He likes football and has a season tickets for both Glasgow Celtic, Largs Thistle and Greenock Morton. He enjoys visits to tenpin bowling, boccia  and the cinema. He watches a lot of wrestling on T.V.   He can use, to some extent, a laptop, PS4 and Wii.

He relates well to people of his own peer group age.

He is out and about 3 days a week.  – He likes to go bowling and the cinema the other two days. This forms part of the role. Football attendance depends on fixtures and involves evening and weekend work, including driving .

He is looking to employ 1 to 2 P.A.s sharing the support .

Pay Rates are : £12 to £13.15

Hrs – either 10hrs x 2 people or 1 person x 20hrs, plus extra support hrs may be available to cover respite at home

Support days will be: The days below

Tues and Thurs – 10 -4pm

Wed – 10 – 2pm

Fri – 10 – 5pm

Sat –  10 – 12  Breakfast support and personal care

Sun – 9 – 12    Breakfast support and personal care

Days and times to be further discussed at interview.

The assistance you would provide will vary but will largely involve the above activities but will also include care in his home. He lives with his parents. You will be required to also be able to

  • Provide support to him at home and assist him to have the lifestyle he chooses
  • Assist him with the choices he makes in his daily life, using a balanced approach which emphasises advice and encouragement rather than making decisions for him
  • Assist him to stay safe and well. This will involve helping him to monitor his mental and physical health and encourage him to take appropriate action to safeguard and maintain his health.
  • Assist him to use local community resources and to get involved and become a part of the community he lives in. This will involve assisting him to develop and maintain relationships with neighbours, friends and family by providing encouragement, guidance and support where needed
  • Assist with organising and getting involved in recreational activities, to try new experiences, meet new people and broaden his interests
  • Work with him to assist him with developing existing skills and to learn new skills
  • Work with him to assist him to cope with his feelings and relationships and in managing the practicalities of daily living, in addition to accessing other support systems in the community
  • Assisting with areas of budgeting.
  • Assisting with domestic tasks.
  • Treat him at all times, as an adult and unique individual, recognising his rights to choose, dignity, individuality, love, friendship and respect
  • To, at all times, talk respectfully to and about him, recognising that he has individual rights.
  • Assist him to plan for the future and to solve problems that are worrying him.

As part of a team you will be committed to providing the best support for him. To achieve this , you will:-

  • Work as part of your team to promote and develop goals for him to aim for
  • Work in a consistent manner alongside other team members, developing working relationships
  • Take part in the planning and review process for his support and take responsibility for tasks allocated to you
  • Be aware of good team communication, using systems in place, including attendance at team meetings.

There is 5.6 weeks paid annual leave pro rata attached to this post, of which the employer can choose the dates for 2 weeks.

Successful applicants will have to undergo a new or update of the PVG disclosure scheme ( at the employers cost ) and provide 2 up to date reference contacts prior to appointment.

There is a 6 month probationary period attached to the post , with a 1 weeks notice within this period if the post is not working out for either party.
